Letters of Recommendation

For all schools, you can apply with just a committee letter plus a letter of recommendation from a dentist. Reach out to individual schools with any questions or concerns.

  • Committee Letter

A committee letter is the most popular option that Duke pre-dental students use for applying to dental schools.

This type of letter provides a consolidated evaluation that incorporates input from various perspectives within the educational institution. It allows the admissions committees to gain a more holistic view of the applicant.

With this option you will still have room in your application to submit two additional letters of recommendation (NOT REQUIRED) from anyone that knows you well. Advisors would be good to include here.

To qualify for a committee letter from Duke you must:

    1. Go straight through from undergrad to dental school OR take a gap year (1 year maximum)
    2. Declare your intent to apply with the Duke Pre-Health Office
    3. Fill out the Pre-Dental Essay Questions for Committee Letter and submit to Dr. Keels (keels001@duke.edu) no later than the end of April of the same year that you plan to apply to schools. Important: In the actual Word document please include your Name, Phone Number, AADSAS application number, and a picture of yourself before sending it to Dr. Keels. In this email please also attach a copy of your personal statement and resume.
  • Traditional Route (Letters of Recommendation)

For students who do not want or qualify for a committee letter, they may go with this option. HOWEVER, every school is different and you must consolidate a list of where you plan to apply and understand what they require for the letters of recommendation.

    • Through this option most schools will require 1-2 letters of recommendation from a science professor as well as an additional letter from a dentist.
    • If you want a letter of recommendation from Dr. Keels instead of a committee letter please email her directly and provide a resume at keels001@duke.edu. Please put “Request for individual letter of recommendation” as the subject to the email.
