Join Environmental Alliance for Earthfest this April to engage with Duke professors, students, experts and activists on the questions defining the environmental movement today. In exploring this years' theme - "Who can be an environmentalist?" - we aim to tackle a range of questions related to identity and activism: How can one bring environmental advocacy into an unrelated field of study? Are social definitions of sustainability and environmental activism exclusive to some groups? How do our individual actions and experiences factor into the larger movement for change?

To answer these questions, our speaker panels, presentations, and interactive student events will highlight diverse forms of environmental advocacy in the Duke community and beyond.

Earthfest Opening Panel: Environmentalism Across Disciplines

In the opening event for Earthfest 2021, Environmental Alliance will moderate a panel discussion and Q&A with three members of the Duke community who work on environmental issues in diverse disciplines. This event will explore questions related to the role of interdisciplinary fields in the environmental movement: What is the place academic research in social movements? What is the power of storytelling as a mechanism of change? What are the obligations and challenges around science communication today?

Our featured speakers are Imari Walker Karega, a PhD Candidate in the Pratt School of Engineering, Dr. Christopher Timmins from the Duke Department of Economics, and Dr. Miguel Rojas-Sotelo, director of the upcoming Water Towns film festival and Program Coordinator for Duke's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
